A Review of US Approaches to Integrated Watershed Management and their Applicability in the Ontario Region

This paper examines approaches to integrated watershed management in the United States, and assesses their potential applicability to drinking water source protection in Ontario. It includes a review of the nonpoint source pollution provisions of the federal Clean Water Act, the provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act. It also addresses state and local source water protection initiatives in New York, Wisconsin and Oregon. The report assesses the current state of implementation of the recommendations of the Walkerton Inquiry regarding source water protection by the province of Ontario, and suggests potential next steps for the federal and provincial governments.
