UnderemploymentGPI Indicator Summary

Publication - Sept. 1, 2005 - By Pembina Institute

This document is one of 51 two-page indicator summaries. This summary examines Underemployment GPI accounts covered by the "Employment" GPI background report.

The Genuine Progress Indicator accounts are constructed along the same lines as the financial books of businesses, governments or organizations that maintain ledgers and a balance sheet, and prepare an income statement and performance reports to shareholders. The main feature of the Alberta GPI accounts is that they measure progress and changes in the condition of all living and built capital, just as a business measures its financial health.

The GPI System of Sustainable Well-being Accounts, which includes both physical and monetary measures of well-being, are structured along the following capital themes:

  • time use accounts,
  • social capital accounts,
  • human health and wellness accounts,
  • natural resources and environmental accounts, and
  • economic accounts.
