Wind and solar projects in Alberta cancelled at an alarming rate

Nearly 11 gigawatts of clean energy projects cancelled in two years

This is almost half (44%) the capacity of all
renewables and storage projects proposed since
October 2023.

These cancelled clean energy projects could have
met 109% of Alberta’s average total power demand,
or 89% of peak power demand.

By comparison, 11% of gas capacity proposed in the
same timeframe has been cancelled.

This cancelled clean energy means that Albertans are
losing out on low-cost power — as well as tens of
millions of dollars each year of potential tax revenues,
which would have largely gone to rural municipalities.

The Alberta government’s restrictions, requirements
and interventions to the electricity system have caused a
wave of clean energy project cancellations.
