Probe Research conducted an online survey with a representative sample of 1,484 Alberta adults between April 27 and May 6, 2026. All respondents were recruited from a national online panel (LEO). The sample has been weighted slightly by age, gender, region and educational attainment so it properly reflects Alberta’s population, based on Census data.
Key findings include:
- A majority (61%) of Albertans say they do not want taxpayer money to be used for a new pipeline.
- 67% say they think the province’s economy is too dependent on the oil and gas sector.
- The polling also suggests most Albertans support industrial carbon pricing (around 60% in favour versus around 20% against), in part due to its role in supporting the growth of sectors other than oil and gas. This ongoing public support is despite the regulation having come under sustained attack from the oil and gas industry in the last 12 months.
- Perhaps most surprisingly, despite much consternation over the last several years from the Government of Alberta about the scale and reach of federal climate and energy policies, nearly half of Albertans agreed that if the province fails to do enough to combat climate change, the federal government should step in with policies of its own (49% in favour, versus 38% against).
Because an online survey is a sample of convenience, no margin of error can be ascribed.
