Exploring Canada’s Carbon Removal Future

A Symposium Hosted by CanCO2Re

Explore the key insights and discussions from CanCO2Re's first major gathering of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) experts, researchers, and stakeholders in Canada.

Exploring Canada's Carbon Removal Future is presented by the CanCO2Re initiative, a collaboration of experts from the University of Calgary, University of Alberta, University of Toronto, Simon Fraser University, and the Pembina Institute. It captures highlights from a two-day symposium held June 23–24, 2025, featuring contributions from CDR researchers, policy experts, and community voices, and provides:

  • An overview of the pathways to sustainable, equitable, and rapid CDR deployment in Canada
  • Perspectives on public perception, political dynamics, and legal frameworks shaping CDR policy
  • Insights on Indigenous engagement and the importance of community inclusion in CDR decision-making
  • A look at CDR deployment scenarios and emerging techniques being explored across Canada

The report also reflects on the IPCC's assessment that CDR is an unavoidable tool in achieving net-zero emissions, and underscores the need for diverse, interdisciplinary collaboration to advance responsible and equitable carbon removal in Canada.
