Economic Analysis of Methane Emission Reduction Opportunities in the Canadian Oil and Natural Gas Industries

Methane is an important greenhouse gas with a short-term climate impact many times greater than carbon dioxide. It is also the primary component of natural gas. As a result, methane emissions occur throughout the oil and gas industry, which is Canada's largest anthropogenic source of those emissions.

This report, commissioned by Environmental Defense Fund and released in partnership with the Pembina Institute, shows that existing technologies can provide a cost-effective way to significantly reduce methane emissions from Canada’s oil and gas industry.

In order for B.C. to meet the commitments laid out in the Roadmap to 2030, FortisBC Energy, the province’s main natural gas utility, will need to present a renewed vision for its business model.

In oil and gas production, methane is often released into the atmosphere, both intentionally, as in the case of venting from equipment or the release of unwanted gas, or unintentionally, because of equipment leaks.

This primer outlines the background of methane regulations in Canada, provincial equivalency and issues that arise as data is updated.
