New report from the Pembina Institute find that, for the first time, a range of oil demand scenarios — including those created by industry, international organizations, and research institutes — project that, if the current pace of climate policy action continues, global demand for oil will peak before 2030 and decline steadily afterwards.

Pembina Institute submission to the Department of Finance Canada on the proposed design of its investment tax credit (ITC) for carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) projects. Public investments in CCUS must be weighed against other opportunities to drive emissions reductions in Canada on a tonne (of carbon dioxide equivalent not emitted) per dollar invested basis. As such, we support the current level of the investment tax credit (ITC) for carbon capture, but not increasing it.

Canada’s Clean Fuel Regulations will drive a dramatic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions once the regulations are fully implemented. Key to success is ensuring that fuel producers are acting in compliance and that any revenue generated by noncompliance is invested in projects that will lower emissions in the short term. A well-designed Environmental Economic Instruments Fund will help support policies.
