
Tim Weis is the senior director of the Pembina Institute's industrial decarbonization group. He is a professional engineer specializing in clean energy policy design, research and strategic decision-making who has written extensively on sustainable energy technical and policy issues at national, provincial and municipal levels, as well as opportunities specific to First Nations and northern communities.
From 2017 to 2025, Tim served as an industrial professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Alberta, where he taught courses in thermodynamics and energy systems and supervised graduate student research focussed on renewable technology market and policy modelling in Alberta. He recently held a secondment with Natural Resources Canada as deputy portfolio director of smart grid and renewable energy with the Office of Energy Research and Development.
Tim also worked for the Pembina Institute from 2002 to 2014, with his last position being director of renewable energy and efficiency.
Tim holds a PhD (Université du Québec à Rimouski) in environmental sciences (sciences de l’environnement), where he studied wind energy development in remote communities. He also has an M.Sc. (University of Alberta) and a B.A.Sc. (University of Waterloo) in mechanical engineering.
