Mercer is an analyst with the Pembina Institute’s equitable transition program, where he works on workforce development issues in the clean economy. Deeply interested in democratic systems, Mercer believes strongly in the power and potential of organized labour to help lead the charge for a greener world.
Before joining the Pembina Institute, Mercer worked on several policy projects in New York and New Jersey focusing on building retrofits, housing, decarceration, land use, and environmental justice. He also has practical experience as a data analyst from his time working at a housing nonprofit in Toronto.
Mercer holds a bachelor of arts in political science and philosophy from the University of Toronto and a master of science in public and urban policy from the New School in New York. His thesis work focused on the intersecting issues of environmental justice, land use, urban planning, and gentrification in West Harlem. In his spare time, you can find him making clothes, climbing, reading manga, or singing his brains out on stage.
