Join us for a Thursday morning panel discussion hosted by the Parkland Institute, entitled Engaging Impacted Communities in Transition.
The net-zero transition presents an opportunity to address the systemic inequalities that have historically existed in the traditional energy system. Learn about how workers in the fossil fuel industry can transfer their skills to the clean energy economy in this panel that will share considerations for building the net-zero economy in an equitable, affordable, and accessible manner. The discussion will focus particularly on two specific groups — women and Indigenous communities — and present the findings from Pembina's latest report examining coal transition programs and shows how the lessons learned from the coal phase-out can inform just transitions in different contexts.
Our senior analyst Grace Brown and analyst Sarah Winstanley will draw on their recent research to speak about a just transition for Canada's coal workers and communities and working towards gender equity in Alberta's energy sector. They will have the opportunity to speak alongside Angele Alook, an assistant professor in the School of Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies at York University and a proud member of Bigstone Cree Nation in Treaty 8 territory.
