EDMONTON — Ed Whittingham, Executive Director at the Pembina Institute, made the following statement in response to the swearing in of Donna Kennedy-Glans as Associate Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy:
“The Pembina Institute welcomes Premier Alison Redford’s creation of the role of Associate Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy and the appointment of Donna Kennedy-Glans to the position.
“Alberta is currently responsible for more than half of the greenhouse gas emissions from all of Canada’s electricity system due to the fact Alberta burns more coal than the rest of Canada put together. The creation of this portfolio is an important recognition of the abundant renewable energy opportunities in Alberta that can significantly reduce greenhouse gases as well as other air pollution that harms Albertans.
“The creation of an Associate Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy is the first of its kind in Canada. Ms. Kennedy-Glans has demonstrated a personal interest in greening Alberta’s electricity production, and we look forward to working with her in addressing this important challenge.”
