This background paper is a consolidation and adaptation of work done by the Pembina Institute over several years on the theme of sustainable economics. The principal author was Rob Macintosh, the Institute's Director of Policy at the time the paper was produced, and now Director of Corporate Eco-Efficiency Services. The report looks at various aspects of the economic and ecological pressures for sustainability, considering growth trends and the need to respond to environmental limits. It identifies 14 of the key features of a sustainable economy and addresses challenges and opportunities in transforming the Canadian economy to embody these characteristics.
