CALGARY — Julia-Maria Becker, Senior Analyst, Clean Economy at the Pembina Institute, made the following statement in response to the Alberta Government’s decision to improve environmental standards in the building code:
“Alberta’s strengthening of energy efficiency standards in building codes across the sector is a major step forward. In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency initiatives create jobs in Alberta and offer significant cost savings while protecting Albertans from future volatile energy prices.”
“The Acadia Center’s 2014 study for Natural Resources Canada found that every dollar invested in energy efficiency grows our GDP by $5 to $8. According to the Canada Green Building Council, more than $23 billion in GDP and nearly 300,000 jobs were generated by the country’s green building sector in 2014.”
“I’m pleased to acknowledge that the building code changes announced today demonstrate the Government of Alberta’s commitment to bring to life the Climate Leadership Plan for the benefit of all Albertans.”
