Fairmont Hotels & Resorts Goes GreenerNow All Check-Ins Are Wind-Powered

Feb. 7, 2006

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, a company known for its environmental stewardship, has taken another step towards going greener — the company recently bought Eco-Logo certified wind power for each of its 249 check-in computers across North America for one year.

Organizations like Fairmont Hotels & Resorts are helping to bolster the wind industry. According to a new 2005-2010 wind power market research report by Emerging Energy Research, wind power is entering a new phase of growth and maturity and is quickly approaching the $4 billion mark in Canada.

Out of an increasing number of ways to support wind power, Fairmont made the decision to purchase its wind power through the Pembina Institute, a non-profit environmental organization that started selling wind power certificates over two years ago. A small part of the proceeds goes back to the organization whose mandate is "sustainable energy solutions."

Marlo Raynolds, the Pembina Institute's Executive Director, congratulated Fairmont on this investment in the future. "Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is one of a growing number of progressive companies purchasing wind power. It's refreshing to see the corporate sector taking on these important roles to make renewable energy even more viable in the future. Clean and renewable energy is where we all need to be heading."

Michelle White, Manager, Environmental Affairs at Fairmont, explains the company's move towards renewable energy. "The purchase of wind power is a continuation of our company's Green Partnership Program that's designed to minimize our impacts on the environment. As well, given the current emphasis on reduced greenhouse gas emissions, it is important for Fairmont to take this logical step and continue to support sustainable technology."
