CALGARY — Canadian clean energy veteran and former University of Alberta professor Dr. Tim Weis rejoins the Pembina Institute today, as Senior Director of Industrial Decarbonization. In this role, he will lead teams working on oil and gas, electricity, corporate renewable energy procurement, carbon dioxide removal, and renewable energy in remote communities.

Weis has worked on energy issues for more than 20 years in the private, public, non-profit and academic sectors. A professional engineer, his career has focused on renewable energy policy and technical research at national, provincial and municipal levels. He has assisted more than 20 communities across Canada — including remote and Indigenous communities — in the development of local energy projects and policies, and has advised government and industry on climate change and energy policy.

From 2002 to 2014, Weis worked with the Pembina Institute, most recently as Director of Renewable Energy and Efficiency.

“We’re thrilled to have Tim rejoin the organization, bringing his deep technical expertise and knowledge of how government works from his time in academia and the public service,” Pembina Institute Executive Director Chris Severson-Baker said. “The clean energy transition is accelerating. Tim’s skills and knowledge will supercharge our work to ensure Canada is ready to lead in what the International Energy Agency calls the Age of Electricity.”

Since 2017, Weis has been a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Alberta, where he taught courses in thermodynamics and energy systems, and supervised graduate student research into renewable technology market and policy modelling in Alberta. He recently finished a one-year secondment with Natural Resources Canada as Deputy Portfolio Director of Smart Grid and Renewable energy with the Office of Energy Research and Development.

When Weis left Pembina in 2014, he worked as the Policy Director for the Canadian Wind Energy Association before serving as Special Advisor to the Alberta Minister of Environment. There, he supported the implementation of Alberta’s ambitious climate plan, which included the establishment of Energy Efficiency Alberta and the Renewable Energy Act.

“I’m deeply proud to rejoin the Pembina Institute at this critical time for Canada’s economic and energy future,” Weis said. “Looking back at my previous time with Pembina, I’m most proud of our work that led to major emission reductions in Alberta’s electricity sector, and on renewable energy solutions to help remote communities reduce reliance on diesel-powered electricity. The Institute has long been at the forefront of helping Canada prosper through the defining issues of our time — climate change and the energy transition — and I'm looking forward to being part of the team again.”
