Canada is in the middle of an affordability crisis, a housing crisis, and a climate crisis, and in many ways, our buildings sit at the center of all three. Building retrofits offer an opportunity to respond to these challenges together. Beyond reducing emissions, whole-building retrofits can improve resilience, lower energy costs, create healthier spaces, and strengthen local communities and economies.

The Pembina Institute’s Reframed Initiative is a research and convening platform that focuses on identifying retrofit solutions and scaling retrofit activity across Canada. Since launching in 2021, the initiative has created relationships, sparked collaboration across sectors, and connected housing providers, designers, policymakers, and community partners through its pilot on six social and affordable housing retrofit projects in British Columbia.

The Reframed Initiative Forum “Reflecting on the journey to shape what’s next” is an opportunity to share what we’ve learned through our pilot project in BC, reconnect with people who have been part of this journey, welcome new voices into the conversation, and continue building momentum for retrofit work across the sector.

As momentum builds around retrofits, the question is no longer how, but when. Our expert panel discussion Thinking about the future - From projects to systems change will build on the day’s conversations to explore what needs to change across policy, programs and implementation to make retrofits more coordinated and easier to deliver at scale. Panelists include Betsy Agar (Efficiency Canada), Micah Lang (City of Vancouver), Wilma Leung (BC Housing), and Jeffrey Sevold (Metro Vancouver).
