Plugging Ontario Into A Green Future concludes that Energy Minister George Smitherman’s goal of increasing the amount of green energy in the province’s electricity plan can only be met by replacing ageing nuclear stations with new green sources of energy over the next decade.

The report shows that reducing unnecessary energy waste, switching to renewable energy, and recycling waste heat from industrial and commercial operations can provide enough baseload electricity to replace the ageing Pickering B and Bruce B nuclear stations as they reach the end of their lives and are shut down beginning in 2013.

As part of the discussion, we interrogate the Bonbright Principles and their role in maintaining systemic barriers which directly affect the uptake of clean energy progress in remote Indigenous communities.

The Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator has released a report considering power generation options and concluded that the province will continue to need natural gas to avoid rolling blackouts and an unreliable grid. Read our response to the report and recommendations that subsequent analysis include additional scenarios and greater inclusion of cheaper renewables in the energy mix.
