Canada needs to urgently reduce its greenhouse gas emissions if it is to meet its near-term reduction targets as set by the Kyoto Protocol. Against this backdrop of urgent efforts, 28 new GHG intensive projects in Alberta's oilsands are expected to come on stream in the next 10 years. The stark contradiction between the need for deep reductions and rapid oilsands development demands urgent attention.
