Mining plays a significant role in the economy and society of northern Canada. The formation of the Northwest Territories Mineral Development Strategy (MDS) is an important opportunity to address questions and concerns of northerners, particularly as the Government of the Northwest Territories prepares to take more control over subsurface resources from the federal government on the eve of devolution. This report was prepared by the Pembina Institute for the Government of the Northwest Territories Standing Committee on Economic Development & Infrastructure. It examines the policy recommendations made by the Northwest Territories MDS Enagement Panel and provides several recommendations of its own.
