Climate Change Science and ImpactsFacing the Climate Challenge: Science Fact Sheet

Publication - Nov. 25, 2009 - By P.J. Partington

Scientsts now describe the warming of the climate system as “unequivocal” and evident in rises in air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising sea levels. Already, average global surface temperature has risen more than 0.7˚C above pre-industrial levels, and this has been shown to be due
mainly to the buildup in the atmosphere of greenhouse gases (GHGs) from human activities.

Even if all emissions ceased today, this amount of warming would roughly double as a result of the delayed effect of emissions already in the atmosphere.
