VANCOUVER / MUSQUEAM, SQUAMISH & TSLEIL-WAUTUTH TERRITORIES — The B.C. government has outlined some of its high-level thinking on building a clean growth economy in the lead-up to this fall’s climate strategy.

In the wake of the province’s release of intentions papers for the building, transportation, and industrial sectors for consultation, the Pembina Institute will host two webinars to help inform this important conversation. The public and media are invited to participate in these one-hour forums via web or telephone (free of charge); online registration is required.

A strong B.C. climate plan would lower carbon pollution and incentivize clean innovation. Industry (41 per cent), transportation (39 per cent), and the built environment (17 per cent) are the sectors responsible for most of B.C.’s climate-damaging emissions.

In order to eliminate carbon pollution from existing homes and buildings, B.C. needs to upgrade 30,000 houses, 17,000 apartments, and 3 million square metres of commercial space every year for the next two decades. (The province also needs a strategy to reduce carbon pollution from freight, and regulations to address the natural gas sector’s methane leak problem.)

Karen Tam Wu, B.C. managing director at the Pembina Institute and a member of B.C.’s Climate Solutions and Clean Growth Advisory Council, will moderate both hourlong webinars. The clean energy think-tank’s experts are also available for media interviews on this topic.

The deadline for public input on the clean growth intentions papers is August 24.
