Woodfibre LNG Limited has proposed the development of a liquefied natural gas export terminal southwest of Squamish, B.C.

This infographic outlines the potential environmental impacts of the Woodfibre LNG project.

The plant and its associated upstream operations could result in the drilling of 24 extra gas wells, the emission of 0.81 million tonnes of carbon pollution, and the usage of 0.5 million cubic metres of freshwater per year.

The Pembina Institute created the infographic for My Sea to Sky using the B.C. Shale Scenario Tool.

Report finds that if all planned and proposed LNG projects in B.C. go ahead without the oil and gas cap, emissions from oil and gas production could be more than three times B.C.’s 2030 sector target. But the widespread electrification of LNG projects that is needed to keep emissions within the cap would put significant pressure on the province’s clean electricity grid.

To meet B.C.’s 2030 oil and gas sector target, achieving deep reductions from low-cost methane mitigation is needed. Forthcoming regulations for the oil and gas sector in B.C. must rapidly accelerate current efforts to reduce emissions and mitigate near-term climate warming. The Pembina Institute has submitted comments and recommendations on the development of new policy to meet and exceed B.C.’s commitment to reduce methane emissions.
