CALGARY — Binnu Jeyakumar, ElectricityProgram Director at the Pembina Institute, made the following statement in response to the kick-off of Alberta’s Renewable Electricity Program:

“It is great to see the province embracing the natural prairie resources of wind and solar. For Alberta communities, new development means more revenue sources and more job opportunities. Renewables, by their nature are widely distributed so the economic benefits are spread over more communities.

“Renewables help lower electricity prices because of their low operating costs. This first round of procurements through the Renewable Electricity Program requires that projects use existing transmission infrastructure. In fact, the existing and planned transmission will be able to accommodate most of the renewables growth expected to happen by 2030. This round will attract investors to back up to 400 MW of renewable energy that will come online by 2019.”
