Business leaders call for B.C. leadership candidates to take next steps on climate change

Feb. 16, 2011

VANCOUVER, B.C. — Today 113 business leaders released a letter encouraging Liberal and NDP leadership candidates to chart the next steps in the province's move toward a low-carbon economy.

The signatories come from a diverse range of businesses throughout the province. At this important juncture in the province's leadership, the letter signals support for the next steps on climate change and clean energy.

"It's encouraging to see so many business leaders recognizing the economic opportunity associated with the clean energy economy," said Matt Horne, director of B.C. Energy Solutions for the Pembina Institute, which coordinated the letter. "They expect similar thinking from the province's political leaders."

The signatories of the letter come from all corners of the province and beyond, including the Peace, the Skeena and the Lower Mainland. They include executives and owners from renewable power producers, retailers, communications firms, clean energy technology companies, fishing guides, homebuilders and organic farms.

The letter cautions against any loss of momentum on tackling climate change because of the investment uncertainty it would cause. As part of any steps forward, the signatories highlight the importance of continued provincial government efforts to forge partnerships that broaden the scope of action and opportunity.

Above all, the letter is a strong statement that a wide range of business leaders want the province to implement the next set of climate solutions.

"Whoever emerges as the new Liberal and NDP leaders will have strong support from these business leaders to advance action on climate change," Horne said.

The letter is available online, and includes the full list of signatories with their contact information.
