Fiscal Policies for Environmental Objectives
The Green Economics and Policy (GEP) program encourages change within government fiscal policy to create stronger economic signals for a more ecologically sustainable economy. The two main objectives of the program are to increase the profile of Ecological Fiscal Reform (EFR) among civil society and public policy decision-makers, and to facilitate the introduction of specific EFR measures in Canada.
Advocating
The GEP program helps individuals and organizations to identify and design fiscal policies that incorporate a range of policy objectives, including sustainability, economic, and social policy priorities.
Documenting and educating
The GEP program works to identify and quantify government expenditure on activities associated with substantial environmental impact. We consider such expenditures in light of the benefits received from and the environmental impacts associated with the particular industry or activity.
Developing fiscal incentives
The GEP program works to identify, research and design fiscal policies that increase the market penetration of key technologies and skills considered to be important components of the long-term shift to sustainability.
Raising awareness
The GEP program aims to increase awareness of EFR policies among individuals, businesses and the media within Canada. We focus on communicating what ecological fiscal reform is and how it can be implemented, and we offer examples where it has been implemented in various jurisdictions around the world.
