How do we build healthy cities in the doorstep-delivery era? As cities emerge post-pandemic to find a growing number of trucks on our streets, delivering goods directly to our front door, what can they do to better manage freight activity, curb transportation emissions, support local business and ensure more equitable, sustainable delivery practices? This panel looks at the number of solutions across North America, and beyond, that are already being tested and which are ready for city planners and policymakers to put into action now, from cargo e-bikes to low-emission zones to new warehouse and supply chain models.

This webinar is presented by the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO), Bloomberg Associates and the Pembina Institute. It marks the launch of their report, Building healthy cities in the doorstep-delivery era: Sustainable urban freight solutions from around the world.

Opening remarks

• Meera Joshi, Deputy Administrator, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration: Meera Joshi most recently served as General Manager of the New York office of Sam Schwartz Transportation Consultants and was visiting scholar at NYU’s Rudin Center for Transportation policy. Previously, she served as chief regulator of New York City’s for hire vehicle industry.
• Janette Sadik-Khan, Principal, Bloomberg Associates: Janette is one of the world’s foremost authorities on transportation and urban transformation. She served as New York City’s transportation commissioner from 2007 to 2013 under Mayor Michael Bloomberg, overseeing historic changes to the city’s streets—closing Broadway to cars in Times Square, building nearly 400 miles of bike lanes and seven rapid bus lines, launching the largest bike share program in North America and creating more than 60 plazas citywide.

• Francie Stefan, Chief Mobility Officer/Assistant Director of Transportation, City of Santa Monica: Francie leads the Santa Monica’s transportation policy, street design, operations and programs. Over her 12 years in Santa Monica, she has been instrumental in the city’s forward-looking transportation work including the integration of Expo Light Rail, completion of the Colorado Esplanade, adoption of Bike, Pedestrian and Vision Zero Action Plans, and the GoSaMo campaign, COAST open streets, and shared mobility programs.
• Nick Bowes, Chief Executive, Centre for London: Nick was most recently the Mayoral Director of Policy at the Greater London Authority. Nick has previously worked at the Royal Society, EEF (now Make UK) and the CBI. Between 2010 and 2015, he was the Special Adviser to Sadiq Khan as Shadow Secretary of State for Justice and Constitutional Reform.
• Gordon Bronson, Head of Urban Innovation at REEF Technology: Prior to joining REEF, Gordon led Business Development & Corporate Affairs for Continuum Partners, and formerly led Public Affairs at WeWork for the U.S. & Canada, where he built the regional public affairs team from the ground-up and launched WeWork in 25 cities while the company grew from 2,000 employees to more than 11,000 employees. He served in President Obama’s administration under Sec. Ken Salazar at the Department of the Interior, and later at the White House.
• Andisheh Ranjbari, Manager, Urban Freight Lab, University of Washington: Andisheh is a Research Scientist at the Supply Chain Transportation & Logistics Center at University of Washington, and is the Manager of Urban Freight Lab, a research partnership that brings together private industry, academic researchers, and city transportation agencies to develop and test solutions around urban freight management and operation problems.
• Moderated by Carolyn Kim, Director of Transportation, Pembina Institute: Carolyn leads policy research and engages with stakeholders and partners to advance solutions that respond to the most pressing transportation and planning issues, and that support the sustainable growth of Ontario’s economy and communities.
