Charitable Status in Canada
The Canadian government grants charitable status to organizations who primarily engage in the following activities:
- relief of poverty
- advancement of education
- advancement of religion
- other legally-defined charitable purposes that benefit the community.
Under Revenue Canada's interpretation, organizations who advocate for change are generally not considered eligible for charitable status.
The Pembina Institute's Status
The Pembina Institute is an independent, non-profit organization that conducts research, delivers environmental education programs, and works directly with communities and industry to advance environmentally-sound practices and sustainable energy solutions.
We also advocate for change among decision makers in government, business, communities and the educational system — a strategy we consider critical to increasing understanding and promoting action on sustainable energy.
Therefore, the Pembina Institute is a non-charitable organization and is unable to issue tax receipts.
