Senior Administration Officer - (Drayton Valley)
(Full Time - with consideration of part-time arrangements for the right candidate)
The Pembina Institute is looking to increase our administrative capacity and is interested in the expertise you can bring to the table.
First and foremost, we are seeking a motivated, organized and flexible individual to lend their Strategic Human Resources Management skills and expertise to the organization. This involves all aspects of generalist HR activities, with an eye to the future and adding value to the organization within the position.
We need this person to be flexible and adaptable having other skills and abilities to combine with the rest of our team in delivery of all aspects of finance and administration in support of our national organization with offices across Canada. This could involve supporting our Board of Directors; taking on further payroll tasks; or assisting with bookkeeping and accounting - depending on the additional knowledge and/or training provided by the successful candidate.
This position definitely involves strong communication skills in working with staff and Board Members located across Canada and someone with the initiative to tackle a diversity of tasks which will change on a daily basis.
Key responsibilities for the Human Resource function will include leading or supporting the following areas in the strategic context:
- Recruitment and Selection
- Staff Orientation
- Implementation of Training and Development Systems
- Support to Managers
- Assistance to Employees
- Working closely with the Payroll Administrator in aspects of contracts and benefits
- Job Description Creation; Salary Grid Management; and Performance Evaluation Cycle
- Creation and Implementation of Policy
Qualifications for applicants:
- a commitment to the Pembina Institute's values, vision and direction

- an ability to prioritize a multi-task workload, take initiative and be flexible
- 5-plus years Human Resource generalist experience
- relevant diploma or degree and/or equivalent educational qualifications in Human Resource is preferred
- solid computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office
Terms of employment
This is envisioned as a full-time position for a strong Human Resources candidate with additional skills to fulfill other tasks. Consideration will be given to a part-time specialty role for the right candidate. The position will be based in the Pembina Institute's Drayton Valley office.
Compensation is competitive with established non-profit organizations and will be based on skills, experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.

Internship Opportunity ~ Position: Environmental Policy Analyst, Arctic Energy Solutions Program
The successful candidate will work closely with staff of the Arctic Energy Solutions Program Energy to advance the Program’s objectives and contribute to the team’s research and capacity building work on a wide range of energy-related issues. This full- time position will be based in the Pembina Institute's Calgary office for the first two months, followed by placement in Yellowknife.
The successful applicant would support Pembina staff in reviewing the applications and environmental impact assessments of large scale-energy projects and identify opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts. The application would also review and critique government policies, develop and deliver information resources to raise public awareness.
The applicant may also work on projects led by Pembina Institute’s Corporate Consulting, Oil Sands and Renewable Energy Program areas.
The successful applicant would be responsible for carrying several small projects at any given time with minimal supervision, collaborate with allies and stakeholders, participate in meetings and be responsible for some administration.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
Education
- An undergraduate degree in engineering, environmental studies/science, planning, public policy or related studies in natural resource science, ecology, biology, chemistry, or physics (preferred).
- Graduate degree (an asset).
Preferred Employment or Research Experience
- Demonstrated ability to conduct quantitative and qualitative technical research in the area of energy, environment, economics or policy.
- Experience with a government agency, Aboriginal organization energy resource development company or utility, transportation or building industry, environmental consulting firm, or environmental organization (an asset).
Knowledge & Skills
- Ability to quickly absorb, synthesize, and act on new information and concepts.
- Strong interpersonal and group communication skills
- Ability to manage and prioritise multiple responsibilities.
- Strong research, writing and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent data analysis, computer skills (i.e. Excel).
- Ability to coordinate workshops, events and meetings.
- Understanding of and experience with the media
- Familiarity with environmental impact assessment, environmental management/decision making, political decision-making, resource economics, and/or principles of environmental protection.
- Ability to respond effectively to phone and email inquiries from the public or professional agencies.

Terms of employment
The Pembina Institute is interested in hiring for this position in June/July 2008. This is a six-month full time position, with potential for extension, based on a 40 hour work week and 4 weeks of annual holiday time.
Compensation and benefits package offered is competitive with established non-profit organizations (although lower than rates paid in the government or business sectors) and will be based on skills, experience and qualifications of the successful candidate. Reporting to the Director of the Arctic Energy Solutions Program this full-time position will be based in the Pembina Institute's Calgary office for the first two months, followed by placement in Yellowknife. Further terms of employment will be discussed with candidates during the interview process.
