The Pembina Institute's Board of Directors provides governance, support
and operational strategic direction for the organization. The board
meets regularly throughout the year.
Our board comprises experienced and insightful professionals who bring
to the table diverse perspectives on environmental priorities, business
administration, and societal responsibility. Board members serve as
volunteers.
David Armour — President
David brings his strong experience in foundations, governance and fundraising to the Pembina Institute. He approaches his volunteer role at the Institute with enthusiasm for the importance of the organization’s work and respect for the team’s research and fact-based approach. David’s past experience includes President and CEO of United Way of Canada—Centraide Canada, CEO of the Canadian Medical Foundation and Senior Advisor for Health Sciences Development to the University Laval Foundation in Québec City. He lives in Chelsea, Quebec. David is a member of the Pembina Institute's Board of Directors.
Frances Bowen — Treasurer
Frances Bowen is an Associate Professor in Strategy and Global Management, and Director of the International Institute for Resource Industries and Sustainability Studies (IRIS) at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary. IRIS researches state-of-the-art innovative management practices and their impacts on societal issues — both environmental and social — and the role that those practices may play in moving industry towards a more sustainable posture. Frances' current and recent research projects have focused on the roles of subsidiary managers in encouraging environmental initiatives within multinational companies, and how firms might induce suppliers to participate in environmentally sound supply chain management. Frances has presented academic papers at more than 30 international conferences and has won several Best Paper awards, including the prestigious "Organizations and the Natural Environment Best Paper Award" at the Academy of Management Annual Meeting in 2005. Frances has served on a variety of non-profit Boards in Canada and the UK, and is currently a member of the Environment Committee of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. Frances joined the Pembina Institute's Board of Directors in 2007.
John Robinson — Secretary
John Robinson is a professor with the Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability, and the Department of Geography, at the University of British Columbia. He is currently directing research programs looking at the intersection of climate change mitigation, adaptation and sustainability; the use of visualization, modeling and citizen engagement to explore sustainable futures; sustainable buildings and urban design; creating private/public/NGO and research sector partnerships for sustainability; and generally the intersection of sustainability, social and technological change, behaviour change, and community engagement processes. His major current project is trying to get the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS) built and operating. Dr. Robinson is a member of the B.C. Climate Action Team, the B.C. Hydro External Advisory Committee on Electricity Conservation and Efficiency, and the Vancouver Climate Leadership Council, on the Board of the Sustainable Cities Foundation and the Pembina Institute, a member of the Steering Group of HELIO International, and on the Editorial Boards of the journals Integrated Assessment, Ecology and Society, Building Research and Information, and the Journal of Industrial Ecology. He has been a Lead Author in the last three reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
Wanda Hellevang — Director
Wanda Hellevang is a member of the Pembina Institute's Board of Directors. She has been a management consultant for 11 years and has focused on helping organizations successfully implement large-scale change. Wanda enjoyed life abroad for 15 years in London and Hong Kong where prior to consulting she did some marketing work for investment banks. In the UK Wanda was a founding trustee of Vital Sparks, a not for profit organization which linked professionals with time and talent to donate with charities needing a boost. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in marketing from the University of Calgary and an MBA from the London Business School.
Wanda lives with her daughter Aysha (her most daunting change management challenge) in Calgary. She is keen to ensure future generations have access to the pristine prairies just as she had growing up on a Southern Alberta farm.
Eric Lloyd — Director
Eric Lloyd received a degree in Engineering Chemistry from Queen's University in 1975. He worked in a variety of engineering, operations, management and executive roles during his 31 year career in the Western Canadian Oil and Gas Industry. Eric was the founding President of PTAC Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada from 1996 to 2007. Prior to becoming President of PTAC, he was Vice-President, Operations for Poco Petroleums Ltd.
Eric's environmental volunteer work has primarily focused on watershed protection. He was founding Chair of the Elbow River Watershed Partnership (ERWP) and currently serves as past chair on the ERWP Board. He is also a member of the Bow River Basin Council. Eric was President of the Bragg Creek Environmental Coalition (BCEC) and currently is Vice President of BCEC. He has been involved in a number of initiatives with BCEC including the Alberta Environment Riparian Land Conservation and Management Project and the Moose Mountain Dialogue with Shell and Husky. He was a member of the Resource Inventory and Sensitivity Analysis (RISA) Team for the Municipal District of Rocky View Greater Bragg Creek Area Structure Plan (ASP). Eric is also a member of the University of Calgary Industry Advisory Council Engineering for Environment Program.
Eric lives in Bragg Creek Alberta with his wife Cathy. He has two daughters, Karin, who is an Environmental Engineer and Janis, who is an Environmental Geologist.
Rob Macintosh — Director
Rob is a member of the Pembina Institute's Board of Directors. Rob co-founded the Pembina Institute in 1985 and served for 10 years as its first Executive Director. While at the Pembina Institute, Rob developed the corporate consulting service. He twice co-chaired the Canadian Environmental Network and served on numerous boards including the Alberta Clean Air Strategic Alliance, the Environmental Law Centre, Friends of the Earth and the Alberta Ecotrust Foundation. Upon retiring from a staff role in 2001, he shifted to business development and consulting as president of Dejanira Enterprises and senior partner with Green Planet Communications. He remains active as a volunteer with a number of environmental organizations. Rob and his wife Lori live on a farm west of Drayton Valley, Alberta.
Ken Ogilvie — Director
Since leaving his position as Executive Director of Pollution Probe in April 2008, Ken Ogilvie has been an environmental consultant and served as a Senior Advisor to the Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability practice of Deloitte & Touche LLP. Ken was the Executive Director of Pollution Probe from October 1995 to March 2008. Prior to that he served for two years as Executive Coordinator of the Ontario Round Table on Environment.
Ken has more than 30 years of experience in government, institutional and not-for-profit organizations, holding positions ranging from project engineering to policy development and public advocacy. He currently serves on several Boards, including Vice-Chair of Sustainable Development Technology Canada and Chair of The Institute for Environmental Innovation.
Ken's academic credentials include a Bachelor of Applied Science, University of Waterloo, and a Master of Business Administration, York University. Ken has accepted an invitation to receive a Doctor of Environment (honoris causa) by the University of Waterloo on October 24, 2009.
